Types of Election Workers

Election Judge

Election judges are responsible for overseeing polling place operations, ensuring compliance with election laws, and resolving issues that arise during voting.

Alternate Judge

Alternate judges serve as backups for election judges and assist with polling place operations.

Requirements

To serve as an election worker in Texas, you must:

  • Be a registered voter in Texas
  • Complete required training
  • Be available on election day (and during early voting if applicable)
  • Be able to work long hours (typically 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM on election day)
  • Not be a candidate or related to a candidate on the ballot

Training

All election workers must complete training before serving. Training covers:

  • Election laws and procedures
  • Voter identification requirements
  • Voting equipment operation
  • Handling special situations
  • Polling place security

Compensation

Election workers are compensated for their service. Compensation varies by position and county.
